Ask Iceland to save whales May 12, 2009

The people of Iceland have chosen a new Prime Minister, Johanna Sigurdardottir. A well known opponent Iceland’s whaling, before the election, Ms Sigurdardottir’s interim government made clear its opposition to Iceland’s whaling legacy.

Please ask Prime Minister Sigurdardottir to cancel Iceland’s five year commercial whaling quota, and ensure that Iceland’s representative at this year’s International Whaling Commission meeting votes for whale conservation, firmly establishing Iceland as an environmental model for other nations to follow.

Continuously threatened by oil and gas developments, entanglement in fishing gear, collisions with ships and occasional whaling by Japanese fishermen, the Western gray whale is on the verge of extinction.

WWF is therefore urging the companies involved in Sakhalin – Exxon, Shell, Gazprom, BP and Rosneft – to postpone any development until a commission of experts have assessed the impact on Western gray whales and made recommendations about further development in this area.

Call on them to postpone any new development work, and together with experts find adequate measures to protect the Western gray whale.
